Mathematics Department Intent

At Rhyddings, our intent is to create a rich mathematical environment where all students can thrive – enjoying, exploring, and building resilience through a deep and connected understanding of mathematics. We aim to develop learners who are accurate, efficient, and flexible problem-solvers, equipped to grow mathematically throughout their lives, contribute confidently in their chosen careers, and function as numerate, thoughtful citizens – in line with the Rhyddings Way – where everyone tries their personal best.

Our curriculum is carefully structured around the principles of sequencing, spacing, retrieval, and retention, ensuring that knowledge and skills are embedded over time. We understand that ability is not fixed – intelligence is malleable – and we plan with this in mind. Key concepts are revisited through deliberate interleaving, promoting deeper understanding and long-term recall.

We have adopted a Maths Mastery approach, informed by global research and the best evidence-based practice. This aligns with the approach taken by the majority of our feeder primary schools, providing a sense of continuity and familiarity for pupils. Mastery at Rhyddings is about developing a culture of deep understanding, confidence, and competence – not just rapid coverage – resulting in strong, secure learning and meaningful progress for all.

We are proud of our inclusive ethos. Our curriculum is designed with inclusion and equity at its core, ensuring all learners – regardless of background, prior attainment, or individual need – feel valued, supported, and capable of success. This includes our commitment to SEND provision, where lessons are structured with clarity, scaffolded problem-solving, and varied representations to support accessibility. We believe that what works well for our most vulnerable learners – such as structured modelling, deliberate vocabulary instruction, and guided practice – benefits every student. This inclusive-first approach supports high expectations for all.
